1 Second Everyday

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Summary

1 Second Everyday is a mobile application that allows users to record 1 second of video everyday that can be compiled into a movie. The app also has a "projects" page that allows users to create "freestyle"movies. This was a two week concept project that I worked on with a team of two others, where we redesigned their mobile application and created a collaboration feature. My roles were UX Researcher and Strategist, and I created user flows, task flows, personas, and a user journey.

1 Second Everyday: Before the Redesign

Home Screen

Users add a 1 second video for each day of the year here.

Project Page

When a user clicks the arrow next to My Timeline, the Projects page opens. Users can create "freestyle" projects here. "Freestyle" means that their movie does not have to be in chronological order.

Project Creation Page

Users have the option here to choose if their project will be in chronological order (another timeline) or a freestyle (no chronological order) project.

Freestyle Project Page

This is a freestyle project page. This is where users add 1 second videos, but the videos do not have to be in chronological order.

The Challenge

Revamp the 1 Second Everyday app so that it competes with or integrates into other platforms and increase its competition with other social platforms by improving social features.

The Solution

Provide value proposition by adding a collaboration feature and provide a more intuitive user interface that will speak to users better, which will increase revenue stream by attracting and retaining new users.

Who’s Using 1 Second Everyday?

We conducted 10 user interviews and received 15 responses to a Google survey in order for us to learn everything about The most common users are new pet owners, travelers, and new mothers. All of these users have 3 things in common:

  • share their memories with their loved ones

  • create memories that last forever

  • do not want another app that has a newsfeed

When you’re dealing with a newborn, you want to capture every single moment you can. But both of your hands are full with the baby. So it is even harder to capture moments when you have to hold your phone with both hands because the app is only horizontal…”

Liz’s Journey with the Current 1 Second Everyday

This is Liz's journey with the current design of 1 Second Everyday. It shows us how Liz feels and what she thinks when she uses the app. We can see that Liz was excited to try the app, but her experience ended in disappointment and frustration.

Competitors: Who Are They + What Are They Doing?

A Competitive Analysis was completed to see who 1 Second Everyday's competitors are and how 1 Second Everyday can differentiate itself from the market, but keep its current users and gain new users. The competitors all had the following common:

  • These apps are all free

  • These apps do not lock a user in a horizontal view

  • They do not have a collaboration/create feature (like 1 Second Everyday will)

  • They all have newsfeeds

The Switch from Horizontal to Portrait Mode

After user interviews and the competitive analysis, our team did a few time boxed hand sketching activities, we created our paper prototype in portrait mode. User testing these initial sketches gave us two big takeaways:

  • Users found the 2nd text screen was repetitive

  • Users also noted that there was no way to actually add videos to a project, because there was not a button to do so

Information Architecture

Before we brought our wireframes to a higher fidelity, we created a sitemap, which helped us create smooth user flows.

Future Steps

The are steps for the business to consider as they grow:

  • Explore data storage options since the app holds onto the videos it creates because if a user works on multiple projects for long period of times they may get annoyed with how much space the app takes

  • More research needs to be done to see how users feel about toggling between the "Timeline" and "Projects Page (see if the current users would be thrown off it changed

  • The business needs to anticipate the future of artificial reality technology and the impact it will have on how people create videos and share their social media
